APIs are a very important component for any kind of software that has to be “modern”; if you need an integration system for your partners, if you want your platform to scale, or if you need to design your software in a more service oriented way, probably you need an API.

Given the importance of this topic, we decided to attend the API Days conference in Paris on December 11th and 12th 2018.
The beautiful venue in Montrouge hosted more than 3000 attendees and more than 127 speakers, for an event that was really “global”.

The two main topics of the conference were:

  1. The API Stack, from technological, business and regulatory standpoints.
    • What technologies should a modern API Stack be based on?
    • How could an API Stack be part of your business (API monetization)?
    • What are the regulatory aspects you have to deal with, when your APIs work with sensitive data (for example, security, privacy and GDPR regulations).
  2. The Programmable Society
In a world of automation, systems can interact with themselves thanks to APIs and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Mastering these topics it’s possible to shape the future of our software, but without losing the focus on the ethical implications that this can have.

A lot of companies from the “API world” organized workshops to showcase their products and to allow attendees to put their hands on these technologies.

API Days has been a great opportunity to get in touch with this kind of “industry”, that is getting more and more popular in the software development world.
Exchanging experiences with people and companies that make APIs their core business is important, for being aware of what is going on in this world and to see how the big players use APIs to improve their products and add features to them.

And last but not least, it has been for me an opportunity to visit again one of the most beautiful cities of the world.
